- 1. Who can practice Aikido?
Aikido is for everyone. Aikido does not require strength. Practitionners of different levels and sizes may practice together. Aikido is not competitive but classes are nevertheless quite demanding and provide an excellent workout.- 2. What should I wear?
The aikido uniform is the same as in Judo provided that it is white with no distinctive mark. You can buy a uniform in any martial arts store or via the Internet. Only black belt students wear the hakama (dark large Japanese ceremonial pants). Colored belts are not worn at AOG.- 3. Can I practice aikido if I am out of shape or have been injured in the past?
If you have been seriously injured in the past (especially in a car accident) consult a physician before starting Aikido lessons. If you are fit enough to practice other physical disciplines, you are probably fit to practice aikido as well. There is no competition in Aikido and there will be no urge to train harder than you desire nor to risk an injury.- 4. When can I register?
You can register whenever you want. Our classes are not structured in semesters starting at fixed dates. Rather, they are classes attended by students of all ranks but during which basic techniques are taught with explanations targeted to beginning students.- 5. How much does it cost? What mode of payment do you accept?
The costs are $50 per month toward the rental of the space, insurance, and other dojo expenses. Additionally, each year there is a fee of $35 for USAF dues, for students who wish to test for rank. Payments may be either by cash or check.- 6. Is it possible to watch a class? Can I try a class before registering?
You may certainly watch class, as many times as you like. You may take one or two classes before registering. However you must sign a hold-harmless waiver in case of accident or injury.- How is the spiritual side of aikido incorporated into the practice?
Teaching at Aikido of Greensboro stresses the martial arts aspects of aikido. Little philosophy is conveyed during classes although training remains faithful to the discipline and ethics favored by the Founder of Aikido. The practice of Aikido can contribute to personal spiritual development and awareness, but it is felt that this can only develop over time, and not be taught.- 8. How much time does it require to obtain a black belt? How do ranks work?
There are 5 ranks (called kyus) of white belt before reaching the black belt Shodan (first degree). At least six years of intensive training is generally required before taking the black belt exam.- 9. Do aikido techniques really work?
Aikido has developed tremendously efficient self defense techniques from jiu-jitsu and other martial arts. However aikido emphasizes avoidance of conflicts and quest for harmony. Aikidokas do not train solely in order to apply their technique outside the dojo. - 2. What should I wear?
