Tai Chi Fundamentals: Every Tuesday 6:00 to 7:00 pm

T'ai-Chi Ch'uan (also written Taijiquan) was developed as a martial art and longevity exercise over 300 ago in China. As early as the 1930's it was found to have profound health benefits. Today it is primarily practiced as a "Mind-Body" and Health Promotion exercise. As a low intensity, low impact aerobic exercise, it is one of the best stress reduction methods, suitable to people of all ages and fitness levels. If you can walk, you can practice our T'ai-Chi Ch'uan.

People take our classes to improve health, reduce stress, improve balance and just feel better about themselves. T’ai-chi is shown to help some people lower their high blood pressure, often under control after the first series of T’ai-Chi and our O’mai Ch’I Kung classes. Very importantly increased balance is reported, even in people of advanced age. This better balance provides greater mobility and self-assurance, and will help prevent serious injury to the oldest participants. It is a low intensity, low impact, aerobic exercise.

Tai Chi is a practice for one’s whole life. In general, we recommend that you try it for at least six months before deciding whether this practice suits you and your goals of self-improvement: it usually takes that long before one can really begin to appreciate the breadth and depth of this very sophisticated art.

TAI CHI APPLICATIONS: Every Thursday 6:00 to 7:00 pm

This class will focus on the applications of the t'ai-chi ch'uan techniques to make the form more understandable, including self-defense methods. We will work on strikes and joint locks (chin-na), pushing hands, short san shou drills, sticky hand drills. T'ai-chi weapons will be explored. This class will be suitable for older adults. Students do not have to know the long form to take this class. Only enrolled students will be allowed to participate.
