Kenosha YMCA, 7101 53rd St, Kenosha, WI 53144

Time: Saturday, 12:00 - 2:00pm. Cost: $10.00 mat fee.

Kagami Biraki, which literally means "Mirror Opening" (also known as the "Rice Cutting Ceremony"), is a traditional Japanese celebration that is held in many martial arts dojos (usually on the second Saturday or Sunday of January) that officially kicks off the new year - honoring renewal, rededication, and spirit. It was an old samurai tradition dating back to the 15th century that was adopted into modern martial arts starting in 1884 when Jigora Kano (the founder of judo) revived the custom at the Kodokan. Since then, it has been a tradition in many martial arts, including aikido, as a way to show thanks for the year’s training and the support of our training partners. Please join us in welcoming in the New Year with a renewed commitment to training. Charles Tseng Sensei, 6th Dan, in the ASU and Sensei of the Lake County Aikikai, will lead a two-hour aikido clinic at the Kenosha YMCA. All aikidoka are welcome to attend. There is a $10.00 mat fee payable at the front desk. Beyond that, donations at the class are welcomed but not required.
